America and Gorbachev

Tonight, former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev will be in New York for a fundraiser for Global Green USA , the American affiliate of Gorbachev's Green Cross International . This sounds like an event i'd love to go to, but can't. That's right, work, work work. Oh, and baby, baby, baby. Oh well, he's so cute, he makes up for it.

Anyway, this news reminded me of Gorby's recent statements regarding the United States' wasted opportunity to improve the world after the cold war. Read the article here and let me know what you think.

In many ways, i think he's right. Instead of being negative about it, though, I see a real opportunity. Let's face it: America put a man on the moon, we lead the way in rebuilding Europe after World War II, we (insert your favorite achievement here, there are many). In other words, we have the know-how, the resources and the spirit; we just need a mission to rally around.

Here are a few of ideas: www.energyfuturecoalition.org/home.cfm , www.climatecrisis.net, The One Campaign .

Come on America, let's not blow this opportunity!
