Imagine walking down the street on a clear day, when all of a sudden a giant ice ball, the size of an oven, falls from the sky and crushes a nearby car. Was it frozen waste from a passing airplane? No, there were no planes passing overhead. A comet crashing to Earth? No, that would have done a lot more damage. A freak piece of hail from a far-away storm? Not likely.
No, this was a Megacryometeor.
A what? That's what I said when I clicked on a link to this article in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Apparently, over the past three years, scientists have documented over 50 incidents of unexplained giant ice balls falling to the ground at high speeds during clear weather conditions. It is believed that this freak phenomenon is related to Global Warming .
Great, first we are told that Global Warming will lead to great floods along the world's coastlines. Now we have to duck giant ice balls?
Another recent incident documented in South Africa here .
Picture Right: Damage by a giant Megacryometeor. Man, that had to hurt. Time to buy a surplus army helmet.

There is a very interesting scientific article about megacryometeors. It was published in the prestigious 'Journal of Atmospheric Chemistry'
